2011 in review
January 1, 2012What a phenomenal year it’s been!!! This time last year, we hadn’t screened our finished film anywhere. No one had written about our film. So considering the year we’ve had, I wanted to take a moment to express my extreme gratitude to you all for making this journey possible…
We had our wrap party in January 2011. Then in May, we had our official World Premiere at Seattle International Film Festival…where Beth Barrett (SIFF Programming Director) named A Lot Like You as one of two “can’t miss” films of the festival!
We have gone on to win awards at every festival we’ve been in…
- Top 10 Audience Choice Award, Seattle International Film Festival
- Best Documentary Feature, Montreal International Black Film Festival
- Best Film Directed by a Woman of Color, African Diaspora International Film Festival (only festival award)
In addition to festivals, we have screened our film at events (non-profit fundraisers, conferences, independent screenings) in the following cities:
-
Seattle
-
New York
-
Philadelphia
-
DC
-
Montreal, and
-
Spokane (where I delivered the closing keynote address at WSCADV’s annual conference.)
Thanks in large part to the efforts of our friend Celeste Hyde, our press coverage during and after our SIFF premiere was second to none!
-
Seattle Weekly (1 of only 2 films to be featured in their SIFF Guide issue)
-
Seattle Woman
-
Rice Culture NW
-
indieWIRE – Shadow and Act
We were interviewed on the following TV shows:
- New Day NW with Margaret Larson
- SIFFtv with Sharon Conner, and
- ArtZone with Nancy Guppy (SIFF Red Carpet interview: ~12:50-15:10)
And more recently, we’ve done radio interviews with BBC World News and NY’s Pacifica Radio…
Looking ahead to 2012, we will be…
-
traveling with the film as much as possible–
to festivals, campuses and conferences around the world -
producing an hour-long cut for TV and classrooms/conferences
-
looking for innovative new ways to engage audiences
-
building our audience engagement campaign by partnering with educators and non-profits who can both broaden & deepen the dialogue about issues in our film
-
revamping our online presence to allow for a more fluid exchange of ideas between
our audience, our creative team, and our non-profit partners.
So here’s looking forward to a very busy and very exciting 2012!!
Thank you for being a part of this amazing film journey!
I’m excited to see where this year takes us…
